Tellaman Shares Shocking Revelation About His Hit Song “Whipped.” South African R&B and hip-hop artist Tellaman has opened up about the unexpected journey of one of his biggest career-defining tracks following the release of the collaborative album T’s & C’s Apply with longtime creative partner Nasty C.

Speaking exclusively to SA Hip Hop Mag, the Durban-born singer, songwriter and producer reflected on the impact of “Whipped,” the smooth, chart-dominating single featuring Shekhinah and Nasty C that became a multi-platinum anthem and one of the standout moments of his 2019 album God Decides.

When asked what the song did for his career, Tellaman didn’t hold back. “Ah, a lot, man. I mean, it’s one of my songs. I think it’s the most successful song I’ve had, or I have in my catalogue,” he said. “So it was a very important moment for me also because from there I was coming from Mayo, which did really well, from Bad Hair, his [Nasty C’s] album, which did really, really well. So it was like the first time where I got to present something that I’ve been working on by myself, which is a body of work, and obviously Whipped is a part of that.”

The revelation that followed is what truly surprised fans. Tellaman admitted that the track almost never belonged to him at all. “And when I was working on that we didn’t really know that it was gonna be that big, you know? Like, for real, for real, for real. I didn’t know. Actually, initially when we worked on the idea, it was gonna be for another artist. And then they didn’t choose that one specifically. They chose another song,” he revealed. “So when I was working on my project, I was like, yo, let’s go back and look at that idea, and then we touched it up, and it became what it became, man. So it holds a very special place in my heart.”

That candid admission gives the track an almost fated quality, underscoring how “Whipped” helped establish Tellaman as one of South African music’s most distinctive melodic voices. It also proves that the songs others pass over can sometimes become the ones that shape an artist’s entire story.
