The Cows have made the ‘moost’ of their ‘moobility’, raising R1 ‘moolion’ in funds for CHOC Childhood Cancer Foundation SA!
South Africa (07 May 2026) – This one’s worth a million moos!
The COWS, a local group of everyday heroes on a mission to make a difference to children with cancer and their families, have just hit a milestone for the year! Their herd of Comrades Marathon runners has raised R1 million for children and families supported by CHOC!
“The Super Cows Comrades Marathon herd has officially passed the R1 MOOlion mark, and it’s all thanks to YOU,” the group shares.
Beyond running, the COWS swim, cycle, canoe, and climb their way toward making a difference, raising funds for CHOC, which they’ve done for almost twenty years.
It all started with eight cyclists in 2008 who joined Kerrin and Grant Bain to honour their daughter Jessica, raising R230,000 for CHOC in their first ride. The group has since sparked a national movement, having raised many ‘moolions’ to support children and families facing childhood cancer.
In the last financial year, the group raised almost R6 million in support of the organisation, which in turn provided over 6000 people with psychosocial support in hospital wards. It also secured over 32,000 nights of warm beds and more than 92,000 meals at CHOC Houses for families needing accommodation during treatment.
In the same year, over 1572 food parcels and 281 vouchers supported more than 8000 families. Almost R1.5 million went toward transport funds for families travelling to and from treatment. And as a cherry on top, 758 care bags were given to newly diagnosed children and teens.
“Beyond the numbers, this support means families can stay close to hospitals, parents can focus on their child’s recovery, and vulnerable households receive compassionate care during an incredibly difficult time.”
We’ve covered many of the incredible fundraising efforts that everyday heroes have undertaken on behalf of The COWS.
In December last year, 18-year-old Andru Van Zyl chose to spend his holiday conquering the open road on his father’s mountain bike, cycling from Polokwane with the goal of reaching Cape Town in a 2,800km solo trip. His target was to raise R300,000. Instead, more than R615,000 was raised for CHOC!
Thanks to everyday heroes and herd members like Andru, the ‘1 moolion’ mark for this year has already been reached!
“The COWS community plays a vital role in helping CHOC continue its nationwide services and ensuring that no child fights cancer alone. Together, the herd is making a real difference.”
