ZIMURA in climbdown over sale of building, says deal was transparent despite corruption allegations

EMBATTLED Zimbabwe Music Rights Association (ZIMURA) has made a surprise climbdown over the sale of its building to a realtor under unclear circumstances.

ZIMURA was thrust into the spotlight after its building was sold to a real estate agency allegedly linked to board member Alexio Gwenzi.

The move raised eyebrows and concerns of corruption, with musicians protesting over the dodgy deal.

Speaking at a recent meeting with musicians, Gwenzi said the organisation had reversed the transaction and is awaiting the Annual General Meeting (AGM), where a motion might be tabled regarding the sale of the building.

“We have reversed the transaction after we heard the public outcry and the lies that were spread and to use this to peddle information that ZIMURA is bad, it sold the building without the knowledge of the musicians,” said Gwenzi.

Without addressing his alleged links to the real estate company Gwenzi said the funds generated from the sale were kept in the organisation’s trust, allaying concerns of corruption.

“Money was kept safe in a trust since 2025 when the building was sold. We decided as the board to refund the buyer. We keep the building and will conduct an AGM and ask for permission,” he said.

Musicians are at loggerheads with ZIMURA over its operations, with members of the board accused of corruption, which has seen the organisation remitting meagre royalties to the artists.

Gwenzi said the beleaguered board is “trying to be transparent”.

“The constitution allows the board to make such decisions. That building was bought from Freddie Zindi when he was the board member musicians were never asked but were told at the AGM.

“We are sorry if we wronged you, but we have reversed the transaction. As a new board we are trying by all means to be transparent,” added Gwenzi.
