By Breaking Belize News Staff (HP): Belize has now confirmed 12 measles cases, with health officials reporting that all infections have been linked to travel from Guatemala or direct contact with travelers returning from that country.
Acting Deputy Director of Public Health and Wellness Dr. Laura Friesen said the Ministry of Health and Wellness has been carrying out nationwide surveillance and follow-up investigations since the first case was identified.
According to Friesen, officials have identified four measles clusters across the country — two in Punta Gorda, one in the Cayo District, and another in Belize City. Authorities say the cases are currently classified as imported or directly linked to imported infections, rather than evidence of widespread community transmission.
Health officials are also monitoring household transmission, where an infected person spreads the virus to other family members.
The Ministry of Health is urging Belizeans to remain vigilant and ensure their vaccinations are up to date as surveillance efforts continue across the country.
