The Lagos State Waterways Authority, LASWA, has intensified safety enforcement operations across major ferry terminals in the state, confiscating 120 damaged life jackets from boat operators during a compliance inspection exercise.
The operation, carried out on Friday, was aimed at ensuring strict adherence to waterways safety regulations and improving operational standards within the state’s water transport sector.
The inspection covered several terminals and jetties, including Ipakodo, Bayeku, Ijede, Ebute-Ero, Liverpool, Sabokoji, Alex and Coconut.
According to the authority, the exercise focused mainly on the seaworthiness of boats and compliance with life jacket safety requirements.
LASWA disclosed that 120 defective life jackets were recovered and immediately withdrawn from circulation to prevent possible risks to passengers and waterway users.
The authority noted that while a number of operators complied with safety regulations, some vessels were found to require repairs and improvements before they could be considered fully seaworthy.
It stressed that compliance with safety standards, particularly regarding vessel conditions and the use of certified life jackets, remains compulsory for all operators.
LASWA also warned that enforcement operations would continue across ferry terminals and jetties in the state to ensure total compliance with waterways regulations.
The agency reminded operators of their legal responsibility to maintain safe vessels and provide passengers with functional and approved life jackets at all times.
The authority reaffirmed its commitment to promoting a safer, more reliable and properly regulated waterways transportation system across Lagos State.
