In a major move for the Stonecrest, Georgia community, Pastor Jamal Bryant has officially announced a new development project that will convert 35 acres of church-owned land into a thriving residential hub.
The goal? Providing 390 units of affordable housing specifically aimed at uplifting Black families and closing the wealth gap.
The $40 million project is a direct response to the skyrocketing cost of living in the Atlanta metro area, which has disproportionately affected Black homeowners. For Bryant, the initiative isn’t just about real estate; it’s about “Kingdom work” that meets the tangible needs of the congregation and the surrounding neighborhood.
“The church cannot just be a place where we shout on Sundays,” Bryant shared during the announcement. “It must be a place that provides stability for the other six days of the week.”
The development is slated to include a mix of townhomes and apartment units, designed to provide high-quality living spaces at a price point that remains accessible to working-class families and first-time homebuyers.
For decades, homeownership has been the primary vehicle for building generational wealth in America. However, systemic barriers have often kept Black families on the sidelines of the real estate market. By leveraging the church’s 35 acres, New Birth is bypassing traditional developer markups to ensure the value stays with the residents.
This move follows a growing trend of “YIGBY” (Yes In God’s Backyard), where religious institutions use their tax-exempt land to combat the national housing crisis.
Pastor Bryant has often spoken about the need for the Black Church to reclaim its role as an economic engine. By converting underutilized land into housing, New Birth is providing a blueprint for other mega-churches across the country to follow.
The project will also include community amenities, green spaces, and potentially retail components to ensure the 390 homes aren’t just a place to live, but a community where families can thrive.
With the development officially greenlit, the church is moving into the construction phase. The project is expected to create hundreds of local jobs and, once completed, will stand as one of the largest church-led affordable housing initiatives in the Southeast.
