President-Elect of the Saint Lucia Civil Service Association (CSA), Nickson Barry, has publicly broken his silence amid an escalating legal dispute that has plunged the union into uncertainty and delayed the installation of its newly elected executive.
Barry’s statement, released on Wednesday, comes as the CSA Elections Commission and members of the “One Team” remain locked in a legal showdown before the Eastern Caribbean Supreme Court’s High Court of Justice Civil Division.
The dispute stems from an injunction filed by the “One Team” over allegations of serious irregularities involving ballot security, custody, and reconciliation procedures following the April 29 elections.
In a statement shared on social media, Barry revealed that he had hoped to address union members “under different circumstances,” noting that shortly after concession speeches were delivered by outgoing President Thecla Goodman, legal action was initiated against both the Elections Commission and the CSA.
The injunction, filed on May 19, has since disrupted the transition process within the union. Barry disclosed that during a High Court hearing on May 21, attorneys representing the “One Team” requested additional time to prepare their case, leading the court to recommend postponing the CSA’s Conference of Delegates until the matter is heard on June 15.
“As a result, instead of having the Executive that you voted for installed on May 27th as prescribed by the Constitution, the union’s business is effectively at a stand still,” Barry stated.
The President-Elect described the ongoing dispute as unprecedented in the union’s history, calling it “some of the darkest days” in the CSA’s 75-year existence.
Despite the legal turmoil, Barry sought to reassure members, pledging to strengthen and modernize the union’s systems in the interest of transparency and accountability.
He also urged members to remain united during the standoff, expressing confidence that the matter would ultimately be resolved.
“I believe justice will prevail and our union will move forward to achieve great things,” Barry stated.
