International News: Mexican President urges FIFA to reflect on high World Cup ticket prices

By Zoila Palma:  Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum has called on FIFA to reflect on the high cost of tickets for the 2026 World Cup, saying many prices are beyond the reach of most Mexicans.

Speaking to reporters today, Sheinbaum said football should be more than just a business and should serve as a way to bring people together, ABC reports.

“Football has to be something else,” Sheinbaum said, adding that the issue should prompt reflection within FIFA. While acknowledging that it is acceptable for the tournament to operate as a business, she stressed that sports should also create opportunities for unity and inclusion. FIFA President Gianni Infantino recently defended the ticket prices, saying they are appropriate for the North American market.

Tickets for matches in Mexico, the United States and Canada were initially sold at prices ranging from $140 to $8,680, with some costs later increasing significantly. Tickets for the World Cup final are currently priced at $32,970, while resale prices have reached even higher levels. In April, FIFA’s resale platform listed four tickets for the final at approximately $2.3 million each.

In response to concerns over affordability, Sheinbaum has promoted a government-backed “Social World Cup” initiative featuring free public viewing events across Mexico.

According to local authorities, about 500,000 people attended 18 street festivals in Mexico City on June 11 to watch Mexico’s opening-match victory over South Africa.
