The Royal Saint Lucia Police Force (RSLPF) has welcomed K-9 Roni as the newest member of its K-9 Unit.

Roni was donated by the French government and arrived in Saint Lucia earlier this week accompanied by his handler. Training is expected to begin shortly with local K-9 handlers.

According to a report by RSLPF Public Relations Officer Zane Romulus, the addition of the canine is expected to strengthen the unit’s operational capacity.

The RSLPF also revealed that work is underway to develop a new management protocol for its K-9 Unit. The initiative includes plans for a new kennel facility, dedicated transportation to ensure the safe movement of police canines, and a structured veterinary care schedule.

An official handover ceremony for Roni is expected to take place in the coming weeks.

Roni’s arrival follows a visit by an RSLPF delegation to Martinique on January 19, where discussions were held with the Gendarmerie and the French Navy to strengthen cooperation between Saint Lucia and Martinique. The talks were part of ongoing efforts stemming from the ninth Franco–Saint Lucia Joint Security Meeting held in October 2025.

The RSLPF said the engagement has also opened the door to additional training opportunities, with programmes planned for multiple units within the force. These initiatives will focus on capacity building and enhanced cross-border collaboration to address shared security concerns.
