Newly licensed Free Zone developers and operators have been taken through an intensive crash course on Uganda’s digital trade system as government moves to tighten efficiency and boost exports.

The Uganda Free Zones and Export Promotions Authority (UFZEPA), working with the Uganda Revenue Authority (URA), held a high-level training session focused on the Uganda Electronic Single Window (UESW)—a key platform designed to simplify trade and cut red tape.

The workshop brought together fresh investors and technical experts, all eager to master the system that is fast becoming the backbone of Uganda’s import and export operations.

Participants were taken through hands-on sessions covering everything from system registration and navigation to customs documentation, cargo clearance, bond management, and real-time reporting.

UFZEPA’s Senior Manager for SEZ Operations and Compliance, Rebecca Nalumu, did not mince words, stressing that mastering the digital system is no longer optional.

“For Free Zones to thrive, operators must fully understand and effectively use the UESW. It is central to smooth import and export processes, compliance, and accurate reporting,” she said.

The training also turned interactive, with participants raising concerns and tackling real-life challenges faced when using electronic trade platforms.

URA’s Senior Customs and Risk Management Officer, Charles Rumanyika, highlighted the bigger picture—saying the system is key to pulling more Ugandans into the formal economy.

“This is not just about big investors. It is about empowering small businesses to formalize, grow, create jobs and contribute taxes that build our economy,” he noted.

The initiative is part of UFZEPA’s wider strategy to support investors beyond licensing, ensuring they are fully equipped to operate efficiently and competitively.

With government pushing for industrialization and export growth, such trainings are expected to play a crucial role in transforming Uganda into a regional trade powerhouse.

As more Free Zones come on board, authorities are betting big on digital systems like UESW to drive transparency, efficiency, and economic growth.
