By Breaking Belize News Staff: A plea agreement was reached on Monday between the Crown and 26-year-old Jaylil Usher of the San Mateo area in San Pedro Town, who pleaded guilty to abetment to murder in the 2023 shooting death of Kean Quiros.
Usher, who had initially been charged and indicted for murder, appeared before Justice Nigel Pilgrim in the High Court where he entered the guilty plea to the lesser charge of abetment to murder.
Quiros was fatally shot inside his home in the San Mateo area during the early hours of August 11, 2023. He sustained multiple gunshot wounds, reportedly as many as seven, and later died at the San Pedro Polyclinic.
According to the prosecution, there were no eyewitnesses to the shooting, which occurred at around 3:00 a.m. However, investigators later linked an AK-47 rifle found inside Usher’s home to the murder.
Police said that on September 5, 2023, officers searched Usher’s residence in the San Mateo area and discovered a Chinese-made AK-47 rifle with an obliterated serial number along with an empty 30-round magazine concealed inside a pillowcase on his bed. During questioning, police alleged that Usher admitted the firearm had been in his room for between two and three years and that he had purchased it for between $300 and $500.
Forensic analysis later established that the 11 expended 7.62x39mm cartridge casings recovered from the murder scene had been fired from the AK-47 found in Usher’s room. The examination was conducted by the Belize National Forensic Science Service Laboratory.
Police also noted that Quiros’ brother, Anferne Quiros, had told investigators that about a month before the murder, the deceased had been involved in a fight with a man known as “Powa” from the San Mateo area.
On September 6, 2023, Usher agreed to participate in an interview under caution. During the interview, police said he admitted knowing Quiros, explaining that the two had played basketball together. He also acknowledged being known by the aliases “Power Jr.” and “J. Lion.”
The prosecution’s case alleged that Usher facilitated the commission of the murder by making available and enabling access to the AK-47 rifle used in the killing.
At the time of the offense, Usher was 24 years old and had five previous convictions, including possession of controlled drugs, keeping a prohibited firearm, possession of a firearm with an obliterated serial number, escape from lawful custody and damage to property.
Justice Pilgrim has reserved sentencing until June 26, 2026, when mitigation submissions will be heard on Usher’s behalf. He is represented by attorney Norman Rodriguez.
