A murderous weekend in Belize – 4 men killed in 2 days

By Zoila Palma:  Belize recorded a violent weekend with 4 men losing their lives in separate incidents between Saturday and Sunday, including 3 fatal shootings in Belize City and a deadly assault in Caye Caulker.

The victims were identified as Kiefer McKenzie, Erik Nelson, Oscar Flota, and 17-year-old Derrick Morris.

The bloodshed began on Saturday morning when Kiefer McKenzie was fatally shot while driving along Albert Street in downtown Belize City.

Reports indicate that a gunman on a motorcycle opened fire on McKenzie’s vehicle shortly after 10:00 a.m. McKenzie, who was reportedly traveling with children inside the vehicle, lost control of his car after the attack, crashing into several vehicles before coming to a stop near the former Scotiabank building. He was rushed to the Karl Heusner Memorial Hospital but later succumbed to his injuries.

Hours later, another deadly shooting occurred on Lakeview Street near the Ghost Town area of Belize City. The victim was identified as Erik Nelson, a recently promoted supervisor at a Belize City call center. Nelson was reportedly shot in the head in what appeared to be a targeted attack. Colleagues described him as a humble and hardworking young man who had just celebrated his promotion the previous day and had expressed gratitude for the opportunity.

Meanwhile, on Caye Caulker’s North Side, 45-year-old labourer Oscar Flota was killed following an altercation on Saturday night while socializing with a group of men. Police investigations revealed that an argument escalated into a physical confrontation, during which Flota was allegedly struck multiple times in the head with a shovel. He was transported to the Caye Caulker Polyclinic but was pronounced dead shortly after arrival.

Then on Sunday night, 17-year-old Sadie Vernon High School student Derrick Morris was reportedly shot after responding to a call at the door of his Crown Street home in Belize City. He sustained severe injuries and later died at the Karl Heusner Memorial Hospital. The teenager was scheduled to sit his final examinations the following day. His death prompted an outpouring of grief from his school community and national leaders, who described the killing as another tragic example of the senseless violence affecting Belize’s youth.

Police investigations continue into all four murders.
