International News: Messi leads Argentina into World Cup title defense against Algeria

By Zoila Palma:  Defending champions Argentina will begin their quest for a fourth FIFA World Cup title when they face Algeria in their opening Group J match in Kansas City tonight.

The South American giants enter the tournament as reigning world champions after their dramatic triumph in Qatar in 2022 and are aiming to become only the third nation in history to successfully defend a World Cup crown, following Italy and Brazil.

All eyes will once again be on Lionel Messi, who is set to make history as the first player to appear in six World Cups. The Argentine captain, who turns 39 later this month, has overcome recent hamstring concerns and will make his 200th international appearance.

Argentina bring significant continuity to the tournament, with 17 players from their victorious 2022 squad returning, although questions remain about whether the aging team can maintain the level that delivered World Cup and Copa América success in recent years.

Algeria, meanwhile, arrive at the tournament full of confidence after qualifying with a record eight victories and boasting an impressive run of recent results. Led by captain Riyad Mahrez, the North African side hopes to reach the knockout stage and prove they can compete with the world’s elite. Young forward Ibrahim Maza and prolific striker Mohamed Amoura are among the players expected to spearhead Algeria’s challenge against the defending champions.

Group J also includes Austria and Jordan, with the top two teams and the best third-placed finishers advancing to the newly expanded Round of 32.

History favors Argentina, who have won their last six World Cup matches against African opposition. The teams have met only once before, in a 2007 friendly won 4-3 by Argentina, with Messi scoring twice.
