MOGADISHU (Somaliguardian) – Somalia’s federal government said Tuesday that it reserves the right to take all necessary measures against Israel over its deepening engagement with Somaliland, describing any such contacts as a violation of Somalia’s sovereignty, unity, territorial integrity and constitutional order.
In a statement issued Monday, Somalia’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation expressed what it called “profound concern” over continued engagement by the Israeli administration with the Somaliland administration in northern Somalia outside the framework of the Federal Government of Somalia.
“The Ministry of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation of the Federal Republic of Somalia expresses its profound concern regarding reports of engagement by the Israeli administration with the secessionist administration of the northern region of Somalia outside the framework of the Federal Government of Somalia,” the ministry said.
The Somali government reiterated that it alone holds the authority to conduct the country’s international relations.
“The Federal Republic of Somalia considers any such engagement a violation of its sovereignty, unity, territorial integrity, and constitutional order. Somalia remains a sovereign and internationally recognized state, and the Federal Government is the sole legitimate authority empowered to represent the country in international relations,” the statement said.
The ministry further argued that any political, diplomatic or other forms of engagement with Somaliland that bypass the federal government lack legal and political legitimacy.
“The Ministry underscores that any political, diplomatic, or other engagement with the secessionist administration that bypasses the Federal Government of Somalia is inconsistent with international law and carries no legal or political standing,” it added.
Somalia also called on international and regional organizations to support its position and uphold what it described as the country’s sovereignty and territorial integrity.
The ministry specifically urged the United Nations, the African Union, the Arab League, the Organization of Islamic Cooperation (OIC), the Intergovernmental Authority on Development (IGAD), and other international partners to respect Somalia’s sovereignty and condemn actions it said undermine the unity and stability of the Somali state.
In its strongest warning, the government said it reserves the right to respond through lawful channels to protect its national interests.
“The Federal Republic of Somalia reserves its sovereign right to take all lawful and necessary measures, through diplomatic, legal, and other appropriate channels, to protect its sovereignty, territorial integrity, and national unity,” the statement said.
The statement came a day after Somaliland President Abdirahman Mohamed Abdullahi Irro, who is on a state visit to Israel, inaugurated Somaliland’s embassy in Jerusalem and signed a new agreement with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, deepening ties between Israel and Somaliland.
Despite its warning, Somalia said it remains committed to dialogue and regional stability.
“Somalia remains committed to peaceful dialogue, regional stability, and constructive engagement with all partners, but it will not accept any action that violates its sovereignty or threatens the unity of the Somali people,” the ministry said.
