SWITZERLAND: TANZANIA has reiterated that voluntary repatriation remains the most sustainable solution to the global refugee situation and is key to efforts aimed at reducing refugee populations by 50 per cent by 2035.
The position was presented during the 96th meeting of the UNHCR Standing Committee held in Geneva yesterday.
In its statement on the Global Refugee Protection Update, Tanzania commended the UNHCR for its continued support to refugees worldwide despite financial constraints affecting humanitarian operations.
Tanzania noted that refugee protection systems continue to face challenges, including cases where some refugees opt for preferred durable solutions without fully considering the conditions that led to their displacement.
It further observed that some refugees decline voluntary return even after conditions in their countries of origin have improved, while others cross borders for social visits or to manage personal investments before returning to host countries.
According to the government, such practices risk undermining international efforts to achieve long-term durable solutions.

Director of Refugee Services Sudi Mwakibasi and Deputy Permanent Representative Hoyce Temu, who represented Tanzania at the meeting, said voluntary repatriation remains more practical compared to local integration or third country resettlement, which depend largely on individual state policies amid tightening global migration frameworks.
On the other hand, the government also informed the meeting of ongoing preparations to facilitate voluntary repatriation of refugees from the Democratic Republic of the Congo to safe areas of return.
However, the process faces a funding gap for verification exercises to establish accurate refugee figures and identify preferred return locations.
Tanzania called on UNHCR and international partners to provide urgent financial support to facilitate the verification exercise and accelerate the implementation of the repatriation programme.
