SINGIDA: THE Tanzanian government has reaffirmed its commitment to ensuring universal access to electricity, with electrification works now underway in 65 of the 135 hamlets that previously had no power supply in Iramba Constituency, as contractors have already begun operations on the ground.

The remarks were made by Deputy Minister for Energy, Salome Makamba, during a public meeting held in Iramba District Council in Singida Region.

Makamba said Iramba Constituency has a total of 393 hamlets, of which 258 already have access to electricity, while 135 remain unconnected.

She noted that the government has already launched the implementation of an electrification project covering 65 of the 135 unserved hamlets, with residents expected to begin receiving electricity connections from July 2026.

She added that the remaining 70 hamlets will be connected in phases as part of the government’s broader objective of ensuring that no hamlet remains without electricity by 2030.

Makamba further explained that the government has developed plans to address persistent power outages affecting some areas of Iramba District through substantial investments in electricity transmission and distribution infrastructure.

As part of the strategy, she said, the government will continue replacing wooden utility poles with concrete poles in environmentally challenging areas, including mountainous regions, gullies, and locations with high moisture levels, to improve the reliability and durability of electricity services.

In another development, the Deputy Minister said residents of Iramba will benefit from a new modern office of the Tanzania Electric Supply Company (TANESCO) currently under construction in Kiomboi. Beginning July 1, 2026, all TANESCO services in the area will be delivered from the new facility.

According to Makamba, the move is aimed at improving service delivery and enhancing the efficiency of customer support operations.

She attributed the achievements to the Sixth Phase Government’s commitment, under the leadership of Samia Suluhu Hassan, to bringing development services closer to citizens and improving their quality of life.

Makamba also encouraged Iramba residents to transition to clean cooking energy solutions by reducing their reliance on charcoal and firewood, noting that the shift would help protect both public health and the environment.
