There are two ways most folks go about reinventing themselves. Some pull out the stops and do a complete, 180º change. Others go back to basics, find the true core of themselves, and strip away the extras.

River Shook has done both.

Shook's 2022 album as Mightmare, Cruel Liars (ND review), saw them casting aside the rough-and-tumble outlaw country of their band, Sarah Shook and The Disarmers. In the process, Shook gravitated toward nerve-rattling indie rock, building their skills as a producer, as well.

With their eponymous solo debut, though, Shook and their partner (former Disarmers guitarist) Blake Tallent dialed back the distortion and turned up the focus. What's left is Shook’s most clear-eyed, vulnerable album yet. Shook’s songwriting shines as it never has before, their voice confident and centered in the mix. As scary as it can be to do something new, it’s obvious that Shook was ready for that step.

Complicated Success

By spring 2025, after the release of 2024's Revelations (ND review), Shook knew their previous band was not working. The wheels were falling off Sarah Shook and The Disarmers and it was time to call it a day. When long-time drummer Jack Foster, who had adopted tour managing duties, decided it was time to leave the road, Shook was almost relieved. The band played its final show that summer.
