Back in 1993, Shaggy first made a name for himself with his hit song Oh Carolina. Now, thirty-three years later, after putting out 17 studio albums, scoring many international hits, and winning two Grammys, he’s put out a new 13-track album called Lottery. It really shows how long he’s been around and how many different styles he can do.

If you’ve followed Shaggy’s career, you know he often works with other artists. Over the years, he’s worked with an impressive range of artists from reggae, dancehall, pop, R&B, soca, Latin, and beyond. People like Rayvon, Rikrok, Red Fox, Sean Paul, Maxi Priest, Spice, Alison Hinds, Eve, Kylie Minogue, Nicky Jam, Farruko, Sting, and many others have all recorded songs with him.

So, it’s no surprise that Lottery has a lot of guest artists. Jamaican voices like Mutabaruka, Aidonia, Beres Hammond, Dexta Daps, 450, and Olaf Blackwood make sure the album stays true to its reggae and dancehall roots. Then there are international artists like Sting, Robin Thicke, Akon, Anthony Hamilton, and Jeremih, who add gospel, R&B, modern pop, and smooth production to make the sound bigger.

On its thirteen tracks, Lottery mixes dancehall, reggae, pop, and R&B – a style Shaggy has used throughout most of his career. The album has thoughtful songs like the hopeful and spiritual opener God Is Amazing alongside fun party songs such as Boom Body, which features Akon and Aidonia. Shaggy teams up with R&B singer Jeremih on the title track, while the popular song Dancehall Nice brings together two different generations of Jamaican artists, with Beres Hammond’s smooth style and Dexta Daps’ more current, edgy sound.

One of the best collaborations on the album is Shaggy’s ongoing work with Sting. They team up for another reggae version of Bill Withers’ classic Ain’t No Sunshine, and also for Til A Mawnin, which pays tribute to ace dancehall producer Henry “Junjo” Lawes. Robin Thicke is also on Looking Lovely, a song that clearly aims to appeal to a wide audience.

In another part of the album, Shaggy works again with Rayvon, a collaborator he’s known for a long time, on In The Name Of Love. This song tries to capture that classic romantic duet feel that made some of their past hits so popular. But there also songs like I Gotta Work and I Am Good, which talk about not giving up, working hard, and just getting by every day – things most people can understand.

One of the funniest parts of the album is Bun (She Loves Me). The song starts with a recording of Major Mackerel from a 2020 Joe Grind interview. Then it turns the tables on Shaggy. He’s the one who famously tried to excuse cheating in It Wasn’t Me, but now he’s in a similar spot, only this time it’s happening to him.

Lottery took seven years to make, and it feels like Shaggy is looking back at his amazing career with this album. It’s a celebration of Shaggy’s ability to move between genres, generations, and audiences while remaining connected to the reggae and dancehall foundations that first introduced him to the world.
